castaways resort

our story

Castaways Resort was previously known as KP's and was established in 1992 operating as a small cliff top cafe/restaurant through to 2002.

In 2002 Gavin & Raewyn Shine purchased KP's and after extensive renovations to the restaurant, reopened the venue as Castaways - a Wedding, Conference and Dining destination. Over the next three years, fifteen two bedroom chalets were constructed on the hills above the main venue to provide accommodation for the fast growing wedding and conference business.

By 2007 the main venue which doubled as a restaurant became a dedicated wedding and conference venue and a purpose build restaurant called Agave was constructed. In 2008 an additional ten studio units were built to cater for the growing demand for accommodation. During this construction activity, the booking office shifted from being off-site and was established on-site, along with offices to cater for the growing staff numbers required to deliver services to the ever increasing volume of customers. A live in accommodation manager was also appointed.

In 2009 a block of farm land behind Castaways Resort was purchased and by 2010 an adventures shed was constructed. Castaways Adventures was born and began providing adventure activities such as Archery, 4WDing, clay bird shooting and blo-karting.

During 2011 Bersantai Day Spa was developed and a purpose built Day Spa was constructed high on the cliff tops overlooking Castaways Resort and the Tasman Sea. Heavily influenced by Balinese experiences, Bersantai Day Spa has extensive stone work both inside and out. Attached to the day spa is a 40 seat conference venue to compliment the main venue and to allow for future expansion of the day spa. In early 2012, an outdoor bath and massage area was added to Bersantai Day Spa complimenting the extensively landscaped gardens and adding to the range of day spa treatments available.

In 2013, the first Glam Camp tent was constructed as a trial for the new Glam Camping venture. Response was hugely popular and demand grew very quickly, leading to three more Glam Camp tents being developed with one being located offsite up a tree...

To further enhance the customer experience, in mid 2015 the Castaways Resort main cliff top venue underwent a full refurbishment. In addition, external stonework, development of a panoramic deck area and further landscaping of the cliff top wedding ceremony point was carried out to create an ocean front focal point for guests to enjoy.

Work has now begun on the Castaways Resort Glam Camping Village. The Village will provide Glam Camping options for up to 48 guests, offering a unique conferencing, retreat and wedding experience and will be a first for New Zealand.
